How to choose a tonneau cover
A tonneau cover keeps cargo dry, deters casual theft, and cleans up the look of a pickup. It is one of the first accessories most truck owners buy, and one of the easiest to get wrong. This guide covers the main types and what to check before ordering.
Soft folding covers
Soft tri-fold covers use vinyl over an aluminum frame. They are the most affordable option, install in minutes with clamp-on rails, and fold forward for partial bed access. The trade-off is security: a determined thief can cut through vinyl. For trucks like a 2014-2023 Silverado or Sierra 1500, a soft folding cover is the standard entry point.
Hard folding and roll-up covers
Hard folding covers use aluminum or composite panels and add real security and better weather sealing. Hard rolling covers retract into a canister or roll at the bulkhead, keeping the full bed usable. Both cost more and weigh more than soft covers, and canister-style covers eat some bed space near the cab.
Rail systems
Some trucks, particularly GMC models with factory bed rail systems, need covers designed to work with or replace the factory rails. Check whether your bed has stake pocket holes, factory rails, or a spray-in liner lip, since all three affect which covers will clamp properly.
Fitment checklist
- Measure your actual bed length; a 5.8, 6.5, and 8 foot bed all take different covers.
- Confirm model year range compatibility, not just the model.
- Note any bed accessories already installed: liners, rails, toolboxes.
- Decide how often you need full bed access; that decides folding vs rolling.
